1. Punk rock shows have incredible energy! I feel as though this is fairly self-explanatory. Just think about it - you walk into a bar/tavern/club and the first thing you see is a massive crowd of people swirling around in a pit to the music. Everyone is having a good time, the music is loud, the energy can simply be FELT. It truly is a powerful thing, and here is an example of an Omega Moo show (shameless plug, I know):
2. The music and lyrics can be very strong and emotionally charged. This in itself may come as a shock or a surprise to some people who are looking in at this style of music from the outside. But trust me, the musicians and artists are many times writing exactly what they feel. While many times this may be anger (as is associated with punk quite often), it can also be about sadness, loss of a loved one, or the hope for a better future. I have been to many shows for punk artists and left with chills about the deep meaning behind the music. Here is an example:
3. Lastly, as a drummer myself I find punk music to be absolutely amazing to play. Something about being up on stage and playing to the peak of your physical ability is simply exhilarating. It is quite the same feeling as when you finish working out. You are drenched in sweat and tired, but at the same time filled with a sense of joy and pride for having given it your all. Also, having people come speak to me after shows is great, especially when you know that you have just enriched their lives, if only for a brief moment in time.
So there you have it, my top 3 reasons for why you should listen to punk music (although granted the last bullet point really applies if you are a musician yourself). I do, however, realize that not everybody will agree with my sentiments on this subject. And therein lies the beauty of art, and especially music. There are so many choices out there, and no one genre or style will appeal to everyone. But hopefully some of you may think twice or have another listen after reading this.
